Is there any research available for the 1-2-3 Magic program?
Yes, there are several interesting studies that have demonstrated the effectiveness of the 1-2-3 Magic program. One study involved using the program to dramatically reduce patient backlog in a community mental health center. Another study employed 1-2-3 Magic successfully with young children in a residential home for children who were separated from their parents. And a third study, the largest with 220 treatment families as well as a control group, showed that 1-2-3 Magic not only significantly improved childrens behavior, it also resulted in large reductions in parental hostility, depression and stress. Can 1-2-3 Magic help with kids with Oppositional Defiance and Conduct Disorder?
One of the goals of 1-2-3 Magic is to eliminate Oppositional Defiance Disorder (ODD) whenever possible. When this goal can be achieved, the risk of later Conduct Disorder (CD) becomes much smaller, especially in children who also suffer from ADHD. 1-2-3 Magic can often play a critical role in preventive mental health. For children at risk for Conduct Disorder, 1-2-3 Magic (and the Major/Minor System) can be very useful and so can its sequel, Surviving Your Adolescents.

Does the 1-2-3 Magic program work with special needs kids?
Yes, the 1-2-3 Magic program works well with most children. Special needs kids simply need the program more! Teachers use it in special education classes and parents use it at home with youngsters who carry a range of diagnoses. 1-2-3 Magic has also been used successfully in inpatient psychiatric settings. The chief requirement for a child to respond to the 1-2-3 is that the youngster have a mental age of at least two. And the reason 1-2-3 Magic is used with so many different types of children is this: No matter what kind of problem a child has, managing the childs difficult behavior and encouraging positive behavior are always major goals of the kids caretakers.
How is 1-2-3 Magic used in a mental health private practice setting?
Many mental health professionals and physicians such as pediatricians use both 1-2-3 Magic and Surviving Your Adolescents to help them in their work. Some professionals ask their clients to track down a copy of the appropriate book or video (or both) at their local book store, local library or on our website. Others let parents watch the videos in their offices or let parents take them home (be sure to get a deposit!). Still others use the Leader Guides to teach the program to their clients. Once parents become familiar with the procedures, their learning and experiences can be integrated into ongoing treatment. Use of the books, videos or audios in this way saves a lot of therapy time, which is very important in the climate of managed care.
Will 1-2-3 Magic work with young people with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder, especially Asperger's Syndrome?
The 1-2-3 Magic program has been used successfully with autistic children and Aspergers kids. In addition, however, these children usually need more intensive and specialized training to help them develop reciprocal social interactions and language skills.
Can 1-2-3 Magic help kids with learning disabilities (LD) and Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)?
It certainly can. In fact, when parents have children with these problems 1-2-3 Magic may be necessary to preserve the sanity of everyone! The clarity of the 1-2-3 warnings, for example, is especially helpful for ADHD kids, and their dual mode (visual and auditory) presentation also helps LD youngsters get the message.
